Kalledevarapura (Kalle – Lord Kalleshwara, Devera – God, Pura – Abode) sits in the heart of Chikmagalur in the Western Ghats of India. The farm takes its name from the ancient Hindu temple at its centre, a structure that has stood for 600 years.

Leon and Damian had the honour of visiting Kalledevarapura at the start of this year, on a fabulous and most welcoming trip. The farm is run by Shankar and his son, Shravan, and is known primarily for its specialty Arabica, with some Robusta also cultivated. Shravan’s coffee knowledge is exceptional. After spending time in Canada working in cafés and roasteries, he brought his expertise back home, introducing modern processing techniques that incorporate local fruits and controlled fermentation.
Biodiversity thrives on the farm. Alongside coffee, Kalledevarapura is home to wild figs, peppercorn, coconuts, and cardamom. Some of these are used directly in innovative processing experiments, and we were lucky enough to try a coconut-husk–infused coffee, which was absolutely delicious.
Our relationship with Kalledevarapura spans almost a decade, and it has strengthened year after year. The passion of Shankar, Shravan, and their team shines through in every cup. Their warmth, generosity, and infectious laughter made us feel completely at home during our visit to the plantation.
Shravan also plays an active role in supporting the domestic specialty coffee community. In addition to supplying carefully curated coffees to renowned Indian roasters such as Blue Tokai, he assists cafés and roasteries with equipment, training, and guidance through his own Beanrove brand—helping ensure his coffees reach their full potential. It’s inspiring to see his commitment to the growth of specialty coffee in India.
