Producer Focus - Serra e Leite

by Duncan

Sitio Serra e Leite is located in the coffee growing region of Poços de Caldas, renowned for its high quality, volcanic soil and unique micro-climates. This is a relatively small coffee farm compared to others in the Serra do Selado micro-region and the easy-going Luiz Zanetti focuses on using hands-on, traditional techniques rather than a mechanised approach.

Luiz has focused on improving the quality of his coffees and producing a range of micro-lots from each harvest with the support of the exporter Bourbon Specialty Coffees. Next week we be releasing a 100% Yellow Catuai / Natural (Sun-dried) from their beautiful farm.

This will be our eighth season working with Luiz Zanetti and his Serra e Leite farm in the rolling hills of Sul de Minas. The coffee is always a select lot of sun-dried natural, and this year from both Red and Yellow Catuai arabica cherries. The style is always classic Brazil in profile – chocolaty, full-bodied and great for espresso. A versatile coffee, it means we can present it as a both single origin coffee as part of our Producer Series range and use as a component for espresso blending too.

Deep notes of chocolate, hazelnut and sultana, with a touch of citrus in the finish. Very smooth. Suitable for espresso, and a range of filter and soft brew.

Stephen Hurst from Mercanta “The Coffee Hunters– our friend and long-term supply partner of specialty Brazilian coffee - lets us know more about their continued relationship with the farm:

“We’ve been working with Zanetti for I’d say about ten years now. Located a short distance from the pleasant spa town / city of Pocos de Caldas, Sitio Serra Y Leite could be considered an enviable example of a medium / small Minas Gerais coffee producer.

The area around Pocos de Caldas when viewed from satellite imagery can be seen as an ancient caldera or super volcano.

This could account for the rich soils, abundant coffee growing, agricultural breadbasket producing many agricultural products like potatoes, oranges, cereal crops, jabuticaba fruit, limes, avocados, etc. and longevity of many residents of the region perhaps also attributed to the purity of the water supply and pleasant climate.”

The new coffee from Serra e Leite – will be available Monday 18th March via our webshop and to all our wholesale customers in 250g and kilogram bags.

We will also have filter samples for you to try at the next Food Circle (Farmers Market) ‘Pop up Shop’ at the Mill on Thursday 21st March (6pm – 7.30pm)
